What is the legal status of gambling in Canada?

October 10, 2013 by James Metcalfe Leave a Comment

In recent years, many countries have legalized online gambling for their residents. Canadians, like the rest of the people, also like to spend interesting time on the Internet and get a charge of positive emotions.

How is Canada’s gambling legislation regulated?

In the early 1970s, the government of Canada decided to decentralize gambling legislation. After that, the gambling market began to be regulated separately by each province through the creation of a special governing body.

This operating model continues to work today. Some provinces still enact laws that relate to online gambling, sports betting and other gambling activities.

The regulatory body that oversees the entire industry at the national level is the Canadian Gaming Commission. It makes sure that the gambling sector is properly understood, there is communication with the government, the media and the public.

Online casino laws in Canada

There are no specific laws in Canada that directly relate to online gambling. It is important to know that online casino players are not at any legal risk. They can take advantage of all the benefits of online establishments without any problems: receive casino sign-up bonuses, free spins, participate in promotions, etc.

Another important fact is that winnings from online gambling are not taxed as long as they are not treated as a full-time job. In other words, if you play at an online casino for recreational purposes, you will not have to pay any taxes on your winnings.

On the other hand, online casinos that operate but are not licensed in Canada are considered illegal. But in general, the country’s laws do not prohibit gambling at offshore online casinos, and most of them allow Canadian players.

Sports betting laws in Canada

Sports betting laws in Canada are not simple. Federal law explicitly prohibits single bets (1 event) on sports outcomes, and so this type of betting is banned throughout the country. Nevertheless, in many provinces, players can bet on parlays (2 or more events) available at lottery dealers. But their odds are much lower compared to the lines of bookmakers, and consequently the potential profit is much smaller.

On the other hand, Canadian laws on online betting are not unambiguous, so betting is in the so-called “grey zone”. Many fans of gambling tend to place their bets on the sites of bookmakers that accept players from Canada. Placing bets for real money is not illegal, and offshore online bookmakers take advantage of the lack of clear legislation in this area.

Lottery and bingo laws in Canada

Although casinos and sports betting are the most popular forms of gambling in Canada, there are a significant number of players who prefer lotteries and bingo. Lotteries are regulated at the provincial level. However, as an exception, provincial governments have launched a nationwide lottery with prizes in eight-digit numbers.

Canadian lottery laws, allow you to register an online account and buy tickets online.

Bingo is also regulated at the provincial level. But it is worth noting that bingo games are declining in popularity, mainly because many bingo halls are closed. However, online bingo has become a great alternative to land-based establishments.

What can we expect in the future?

The Canadian government has been trying to completely legalize online gambling. But work with Bill C-218 is on hold. Canada’s parliament has shifted its attention to more urgent matters because of the Covid-19 pandemic. So Canadians shouldn’t expect a tougher law and a ban on online gambling anytime soon.
